Batiks

Hand-finished Bali batik cotton, 112cm wide, from £6.99 a metre. No two pieces are quite alike — that's the point.
Wax-resist dyeing, by hand
Batik is made by drawing hot wax onto cloth, dyeing it, then removing the wax so the waxed areas resist the colour. Repeating that builds depth no printed fabric reproduces: colour that shifts across the piece, fine crackle lines where the wax broke, and a surface that reads differently depending on the light.
Because it's a hand process, variation between pieces is inherent rather than a fault. If your project needs an exact match across several metres, order it in one length. Our batiks are 100% cotton at around 112cm wide, and they suit quilting, patchwork, bags and clothing equally.
