Marks that come off again

Marking tools exist to be removed. Tailor's chalk brushes off, water-soluble pens sponge out, and air-erasable ink fades on its own over hours. The choice depends on how long you need the mark to survive.

Test on a scrap of your actual fabric every time — some markers set permanently on some fibres, and heat will fix almost any of them, so never press over a mark you still need to remove. Mark on the wrong side where you can, and use a chalk colour close to the fabric on anything that might show through.
