Working with natural jute fibres and weaves

Hessian, also referred to as burlap, is a coarse woven fabric made from natural plant fibres, specifically the jute plant. The raw fibres create an irregular texture across the surface, with weave densities varying across different grades. Some weaves are open, whilst others feature a tighter grid such as 11x11 threads per inch. In weight, materials such as a 220gr/m2 woven jute provide a firm, pliable feel suitable for structural uses like upholstery underlinings, sacks, and garden craft.

Selecting the right width for upholstery, garden, or craft use

Fabric widths in this collection range from narrow strips to wide sheeting, accommodating different project scales:

• Pre-cut 30cm packs: Sized at 30cm x 5m, these packs provide narrow lengths ready for table runners, borders, and smaller crafting tasks.
• Narrow widths: Measurements such as 39" wide, 40" wide, and 100 cm wide suit craft work, small sacking, and decorative displays.
• Medium widths: Options including 54" / 155cm and 58" wide offer broader coverage for garden applications and larger craft makes.
• Wide widths: Broad 72" wide fabric provides wide, continuous coverage for upholstery foundations and large utility coverings.

Options are available in classic natural jute burlap as well as coloured hessian for decorative and seasonal displays.
