Choosing a hook

Hook size drives tension, so the size named in a pattern is the starting point, not a suggestion — and because every crocheter works at their own tightness, a tension square tells you whether to go up or down a size.

The material changes how it feels rather than what it does: aluminium is slick and fast, bamboo grips slightly and slows yarn that wants to slide, and an ergonomic handle takes the pressure off the hand on long sessions, which matters if you crochet for hours or have joint pain. A graded set is the sensible start; single hooks fill gaps or replace a favourite.
