Foil Fabric

A metallic surface on a soft base

Foil fabric is made by bonding a thin metallic film onto a base cloth, usually a stretch knit. The result is a mirror-like or crackled metallic finish that still moves and stretches like fabric rather than behaving like sheeting.

It is used for dance and skating costumes, pantomime and stage wear, party dresses, Christmas makes and craft panels. Treat the metallic face carefully: pin only in the seam allowance, sew with a ballpoint needle and a longer stitch, and press from the reverse with a cloth — direct heat will dull or lift the foil.
