James C Brett yarn — a Yorkshire spinner known for self-patterning and value yarns for everyday knitting.
Working with Top Value DK yarn
James C Brett Top Value DK is a double knitting yarn spun from 100% acrylic. Double knit sits in the mid-weight bracket for hand knitting and crochet, working up neither too thick nor too fine. This makes it a practical option for everyday projects, including children's clothes, cardigans, scarves, toys, and knitted blankets.
Each ball weighs 100g and provides 290m (317 yds) of yarn. Because acrylic fibre does not shrink or felt like animal fleece, the yarn maintains clear stitch definition across textured patterns such as stocking stitch, garter stitch, cables, ribbing, and crochet granny squares.
Gauge and needle specifications
Top Value DK is designed for use with 4mm knitting needles. When worked in stocking stitch on 4mm needles, the recommended tension is 22 stitches and 30 rows to a 10cm square. Because this tension aligns with standard UK double knit pattern tension, the yarn can be substituted into conventional DK garment and accessory instructions without recalculating stitch counts.
Working a tension swatch before casting on your main project confirms whether your individual gauge matches the pattern specifications, which prevents finished pieces from turning out smaller or larger than intended.
