How to insert pom pom fringe into a seam

When sewing fringe into cushions, pillowcases, or lined accessories, the neatest finish comes from enclosing the woven header tape inside the seam allowance. Pin the flat tape to the right side of your primary fabric, pointing the pom poms inward towards the centre of the piece. Place your backing fabric right sides together over the top, sandwiching the trim between the layers.

Stitching with a standard presser foot can sometimes push the rounded bobbles out of alignment. Swapping to a zipper foot or piping foot lets the needle travel close along the edge of the woven braid without catching the pom poms. Once the seam is sewn and turned right side out, the braid remains hidden inside while the fringe drops neatly along the border.

Attaching decorative trim to flat hems and craft projects

For items that already have a finished edge, such as curtain panels, blankets, lampshades, or clothing hems, the braid can be topstitched directly into place. Our haberdashery range includes Simplicity 1862 trimming across a selection of colours to coordinate with different fabrics. Baste or pin the flat tape along the hemline on either the right side or under the folded edge. Stitch through the centre of the header braid using a straight machine stitch or hand slip stitch, taking care that the needle clears the threads holding each pom pom.
