Hand Sewing Essentials

Hand sewing essentials from £1 — needles, thimbles, threaders and small tools for the work done away from the machine.
Threaders, thimbles and unpicking tools
Preparing hand sewing equipment and correcting mistakes require reliable small tools. Threading fine needles can be difficult without assistance, which is where dedicated threaders help. Options include manual threaders with integrated cutting blades, alongside automatic threaders designed with dual slots to accommodate both small and large needle eyes. When pushing needles through dense cloth, zinc die-cast thimbles protect fingertips from continuous pressure.
Seam rippers are also kept close to hand for unpicking stray stitches and cleanly slitting open machine-sewn buttonholes.
Selecting measuring tapes for dressmaking and quilting
Accurate dimensions are essential whether working on tailoring, patchwork or home decorating projects. Different measuring tapes offer specific formats suited to particular tasks:
- Analogical tapes: Flexible fibreglass tapes displaying metric and imperial units side by side on the same surface, allowing instant conversion without flipping the tape.
- Tailoring and quilting tapes: Extra-long tapes fitted with a 5cm or 2in rigid steel or plastic end piece, designed to assist when measuring inside leg seams or arm lengths.
- Metric tapes: Clear tapes calibrated strictly in centimetres and millimetres, such as reversible designs with yellow on one face and white on the other.
- Spring-loaded tapes: Retractable ergonomic designs that wind the tape back into a protective housing at the press of a button.
