Broderie anglaise from £6.95 a metre — cotton with embroidered cut-out patterns, for summer clothes and children's wear.
Eyelet embroidery and base fibres
Broderie anglaise is characterised by open cut-out areas edged with needlework, traditionally stitched into woven cloth. While pure cotton options provide a breathable, natural finish, the selection here also features practical polycotton blends as well as 100% polyester mesh. The pierced cut-work varies across the collection, offering everything from neat three-hole and six-hole arrangements to broader floral shapes, trailing leaves and vintage rhombus patterns.
Selecting printed and openwork textiles for dressmaking
Because of the open eyelets, garments sewn in these fabrics are frequently lined or worn over a slip, though the fabric also works well for unlined sleeves, yoke inserts and decorative homeware. When selecting a piece for your project, you can choose between plain textured surfaces and detailed printed designs:
- Printed polycottons displaying colourful floral motifs, including watercolour pansies, dandelions and forget-me-nots in purple, blue, yellow and pink on white grounds.
- Unprinted fabrics where the stitched needlework, pierced foliage and multi-hole patterns create subtle, raised surface texture.
- Embroidered circle mesh, which provides a light, semi-sheer base suited to dress overlays, clothing accents and home sewing.
