The hand-sewing basics

Some jobs are simply better by hand: hemming where no stitch should show, closing a lining, attaching a binding, setting a zip in fine cloth, and every repair. These are the tools for that work.

Needle choice follows the job — sharps for general sewing, betweens (shorter and stiffer) for quilting, embroidery needles with a longer eye for thicker thread. A thimble stops sore fingers and, more usefully, lets you push a needle through heavy layers with control. Match thread weight to fabric weight rather than defaulting to whatever is on the shelf.
