When to use temporary spray adhesive versus fabric glue
Temporary adhesive sprays and liquid glues serve distinct roles in sewing, patchwork, and dressmaking. A temporary spray adhesive holds layers gently together without the need for pinning or hand tacking. In quilting, aerosol sprays such as Odif 505 are used for quilt basting to secure the quilt top, wadding, and backing before quilting. They are also used to hold fabric firmly in place inside an embroidery hoop for machine embroidery, letting you reposition materials without gumming up needles or leaving a stiff finish.
Selecting adhesives for trims, appliqués and embellishments
When a permanent fix is needed, liquid fabric adhesives create a firm bond that withstands regular handling. Many dry clear and remain flexible, ensuring bonded areas do not turn brittle or stiff against the cloth. The right adhesive depends on the materials you need to secure:
- All-purpose craft glues: Very sticky formulas, such as Hi-Tack glue, dry clear and flexible for general gluing, fabric assembly, and craft projects.
- Washable fabric glues: Glues designed for textiles often feature non-run formulas and two-way applicators to spot or spread adhesive directly onto ribbons, lace, and appliqués. These glues dry clear, fast, and strong, and remain machine washable.
- Embellishment adhesives: Dedicated gemstone glue secures glass and plastic beads, pearls, mirrors, and rhinestones to fabric without clouding delicate decorative surfaces.
