Mesh fabric from £6.99 a metre — open stretch net for sportswear panels, linings, bags and costume.
Working with lightweight polyester net
Mesh is a semi-sheer, open-structure textile formed with a knitted or woven grid that lets air and light pass through easily. At a fine 30GSM, 100% polyester netting is exceptionally airy while retaining the tear resistance inherent to synthetic fibres. It does not fray along raw edges in the manner of standard wovens, which makes it straightforward to trim, gather, or stitch into garment seams.
Because fine net can occasionally snag on sewing machine feed dogs, sewers often achieve the cleanest finish by fitting a fine ballpoint or microtex needle and placing tissue paper beneath seams to stabilise the stitch line.
Using colourful mesh for costumes and garment overlays
While open netting often acts as a functional utility layer, patterned designs featuring all-over pastel rainbow colourways bring a decorative focus to dressmaking. A 58-inch width offers generous yield across the metre for gathered skirts, dancewear, carnival pieces, and theatrical costumes where volume is needed without adding bulk or heat.
Beyond performance wear, colourful mesh functions well as a sheer overlay over opaque fabrics, adding dimension and subtle tint to sleeves, yokes, or creative craft projects.
