Soft Shell Fabric

Softshell fabric from £13.95 a metre — a bonded technical cloth: wind-resistant and water-repellent outside, fleece-backed inside.
How softshell fleece behaves in outdoor garments
Softshell fleece combines two distinct layers into a single, lightweight textile: a woven, shower-proof face and an insulating fleece back. This bonded construction means garments made from it tackle both the middle insulating layer and the outer protective shell at once. Because the woven surface is wind- and water-resistant while remaining warm and breathable, the material is predominantly used for sports jackets, walking coats, and practical outerwear intended to withstand changeable weather.
Working with bonded cloth differs slightly from standard dressmaking fabrics. Because the fleece backing is already integrated, finished garments do not necessarily require a separate lining layer, which simplifies coat construction and reduces bulk at the seams.
Patterned and plain finishes for practical coats
While technical outerwear is traditionally plain, softshell is also well suited to children's coats and colourful everyday layers. The range covers both plain yardage and an assortment of detailed digital prints:
- Botanical and nature motifs, including leafy foliage, digital birds, lilies, and daisies in bloom.
- Playful novelty prints, featuring dinosaurs, bunnies, graffiti art, and umbrellas.
- Graphic and pictorial designs, such as geometric rainbows and atmospheric galaxy patterns in shades of pink, blue, and purple.
