Understanding winceyette and flannelette

Brushed cotton, often labelled as winceyette, flannel, or flannelette, is woven cotton that has undergone a mechanical brushing process. Fine bristles raise the surface fibres to create a soft, napped pile. This nap gives the cloth its characteristic brushed finish, holding warmth against the skin while remaining breathable and comfortable.

What to make with plain brushed cotton

Because the finish is soft directly against the skin, this material is traditionally favoured for everyday layering and comfortable home sewing. Typical projects include:

  • Children's clothing and baby garments
  • T-shirts and casual dressmaking
  • Light blankets and nursery throws
  • Bed sheets and pillowcases

Comparing widths and weights

When measuring up for a pattern, pay attention to the roll width. The range includes narrower 44-inch (112cm) bolts alongside wider 58-inch (149cm) options. You will also find plain 100% cotton options as well as dedicated lightweight variations. A 44-inch width is well suited to children's apparel, smaller garment pieces, and light blankets, whilst a 58-inch width gives the span required for larger dressmaking and bedding projects without piecing panels together.
