Duchess and bridal satin in plain colours, from £2.69 a metre — a heavy, lustrous satin with real body for occasionwear and structured gowns.
Duchess satin compared to lightweight silky satin
Plain satin fabrics vary considerably in weight, sheen, and structure. Duchess bridal satin is a heavier fabric known for its substantial body and subtle or matt finish, making it well suited to structured garments, evening wear, and bridal gowns. Varieties include dull bridal satins as well as double-sided duchess satins that present a smooth face on both sides.
In contrast, standard silky satins are noticeably lighter—around 85gr/m2—with a more fluid drape and a higher gloss. These lighter polyester fabrics are typically used for costumes, craft projects, and flowing dressmaking where soft drape is preferred over rigid form.
Fibre options across the collection
While satin describes the weave rather than the raw material, the choice of fibre directly influences the fabric's drape and handle. Our selection, typically cut at widths of 150 cm (59 to 60 inches), includes:
- Polyester: Used for both fluid silky satins and heavy, low-sheen bridal duchess fabrics.
- Silk: Traditional plain silk satin providing a natural drape and soft lustre.
- Cotton: Pure cotton back crepe satin, featuring a smooth satin face paired with a textured crepe weave on the reverse.
