Brushed on one side, warm on both

Brushed cotton, also called flannelette, is ordinary woven cotton passed under fine wire brushes, which lifts a soft nap on the surface. That raised fibre traps air, so it feels warm immediately against skin without being heavy, and it has a matte, slightly fuzzy handle rather than a crisp one.

It is what winter pyjamas, nightdresses, bed sheets, baby blankets and cot bedding are traditionally made from, and it is excellent for soft toys and quilt backings. Expect some shrinkage on the first wash — wash it before you cut. Cut all your pieces running the same way so the shading matches.
