Why gauze drapes the way it does
Gauze is woven very openly, and double gauze is two of those layers bonded at intervals so they move together. That construction is what gives it the crinkled surface and the weightless drape — it falls softly rather than holding a shape, and it breathes in a way tightly woven cotton cannot.
It is the standard choice for baby blankets, muslins and bibs because it is gentle against skin and gets softer with every wash. Beyond that it makes summer dresses, loose shirts, wide trousers and scarves. Pre-wash before cutting: gauze shrinks and crinkles on its first wash, and you want that to happen before you sew, not after.
